Sky Island Alliance and Tucson Audubon Society present :

Water Conservation Evening-in two parts,
with Dutch Salmon, Gila Conservation Coalition (GCC), &
Amy McCoy, Sonoran Institute

Learn about initiatives to save New Mexico's last wild river and of
conservation challenges and opportunities in the Upper Santa Cruz Valley.

When: Monday, October 8th, 7:00 PM REVISED

Where: DuVal Auditorium in University Medical Center near the intersection
of Campbell and Speedway in Tucson

Picture a place where over 250 species of birds have been recorded; where
streamside habitat supports wildlife ranging from the mountain lion to the
loach minnow, and where no large dams impede the flow of waters. This is the
Gila River , which the Gila Conservation Coalition (GCC) strives to protect.

Join GCC chairman, Dutch Salmon for a picturesque tour of the natural and
cultural history of the Gila, and the latest threat to divert 14,000
acre-feet of water each year from one of the last free-flowing rivers in the
Southwest.

Mr. Salmon founded GCC in 1984 and has written about and advocated for the
river since then. He has been fortunate to canoe, hike, and fish the Gila
from its source in New Mexico to Safford, Arizona, and will give us
first-hand testimony.

Next we will zoom in to our own backyard, where Amy McCoy will discuss
Sonoran Institute's recently published report: Sustainable Water Management:
Guidelines for Meeting the Needs of People and Nature in the Arid West in
the context of current initiatives in the Upper Santa Cruz River Valley.

During the last decade, five of the six fastest growing states were in the
western United States. This growth has brought many challenges, not the
least of which is reconciling the water needs of current and future
residents, agriculture, and industry with the preservation of the West's
remaining rivers and streams and the survival of the plants and animals that
depend upon them.

Ms. McCoy, an ecologist who manages the Sonoran Institute's Santa Cruz River
conservation project, will help us appreciate and understand the needs of a
river that Tucson Audubon is actively protecting through its habitat
restoration and conservation programs.
